James Adams was brought up in Coventry, and is a graduate of the Universities of Durham (BA) and Bristol (MA) focussing on American Studies and Theology. He later transitioned from the Anglican ministry to a career in education, where he became the Head of Religious & Social Studies for over twenty years in a large 6th form centre, teaching three ‘A’ levels.
James is the author of three books, and he contributes to various canal magazines:
Attached to Coventry City (Pitch Publishing 2021)
Passionate - the psychology of a passionate life (Austin Macauley 2022)
The Curious Incident of the Bacon Butty, a Broken Tiller and a Mid-life Crisis (tbp 2026)
James has also had some of these canal stories published in canal magazines, such as: Waterways World, Canal Boat, and www.canalsonline.uk which is serialising various sections of 'The Curious Incident...'
Outside of writing, James enjoys reading, exploring American politics, supporting Coventry City F.C., 'creative psychology', dancing, travelling, and other creative interests. He has two children.
... is the author’s memoir about 20 years of canal cruising with various youth groups and friends. The book contains cruise-by-cruise stories and adventures of how this annual floating holiday morphed from a 4-boat cruise with 46 crew, to a single-boat holiday for himself and best friend, Mike. The stories are told in four sections that reflect the changing moods over the years:
A. Fair Weather (ch.1-4)
B. The Gathering Storm (ch.5-6)
C. Sunshine & Shipwrecks (ch.7-11)
D. Calmer Waters (ch.12-15)
In conclusion, the reader is then invited to review the chapters and their potential
life-lessons for their own life.
As the stories proceed, the author’s own life-story comes under scrutiny as he recounts his mid-life crisis on a Trent & Mersey towpath near Stone, before enduring, two years later “The Worst Trip” he’d ever been on!
